The domestic market of petroleum products operates at three levels (refinery, wholesale and retail trade). Production of crude oil in Greece involves two domestic oil refiners (4 refineries) and a significant number of wholesalers.
According to the Ministry of Environment and Energy, 55 companies are licensed to wholesale petroleum products, 25 companies hold a biofuel license and 65 hold a gas supply license.
The total domestic production of Greek refineries in petroleum products showed an increase of 7% in 2021 compared to 2020.
The overall consumption of petroleum products reported rise of 8% in 2021. Fuel consumption in the "Internal Market" increased by 1.3%, accounting for 66% of total consumption. International market fuel consumption (aviation and marine fuel) increased by 25%, accounting for 34% of total consumption.
Automotive diesel had the largest share in the total fuel consumption in 2021 (26.6%), followed by marine fuel oil (25.3%) and gasoline (20.8%).
The total consumption of natural gas has registered a remarkable rise of 11% in 2021 compared to 2020, reaching 6,077 million Nm3.
