ELECTRIC LIGHT BULBS

There are no manufacturers in Greece as regards the sector of electric light bulbs. The total demand is covered entirely by imports. Some exports which take place are re-exports.
Regarding the breakdown of imports by main category of lamps, in 2021 Led lamps had the lion’s share in the total value of imports with 81.5% (€37.9 million) followed by the various other categories of lamps (12.9% share).
The overall size of the domestic lamp market has been on the rise over the period 2016-2019 recording an average annual growth rate of 12% in value (wholesale prices). In particular, in 2019 there was a 10% increase compared to the previous year. During this particular period, the development of new technology lamps (LED) was important, which started to become particularly popular among consumers (due to their advantages), replacing a large part of conventional – traditional bulbs.
However, in the coming year 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic and the suspension of operation of the entire HO-RE-CA sector, for a long time (which led to limited renovations among others), halted the upward trend of the specific market, recording a decrease of 9.5% compared to 2019.
Recovery of the lamp market appears again in 2021 (with the reopening of the economy) the size of which increased by 11.1% compared to the previous year.
Regarding the breakdown of lamp sales by category, it is estimated that, in 2021, LED technology lamps covered most of the market, with a share (in value) of 75%-80%. Over time, the share of LED lamps has been increasing as they replace a large part of traditional lamps, many types of which are being withdrawn from the market.
Other lamp categories such as fluorescent, halogen, mercury, incandescent, etc. accounted for the remaining 20%-25% of the market.
