The cable industry in Greece consists of a very small number of manufacturers having as the main or sole activity the manufacture of cables. On the other hand, some imports of certain categories of cables (for electric installation) are realized by companies operating in the electrical material trade. Investments in the energy and telecommunications sector together with the building / construction activity, are considered the main factors affecting the demand for cables.
The size of the cable production (in volume) increased by 4.5% in 2014 compared to 2013, while most of the cables produced being directed to exports.
Domestic consumption of cables (in terms of quantity) showed a downward trend in the period 2010-2014 (average annual rate: -7.5%). In value terms, the market declined at a rate of about -12% in the same period.
Demand in Greece covered mainly by cables produced by the local manufacturers. Import penetration ranged between 23% -32% in the recent years. Noteworthy is the export performance of the sector, as most of the production is being exported to foreign markets. Exports accounted for about 60% of total production.
