The overall domestic production of standardized fresh vegetables has been on the rise over the last decade, presenting though annual fluctuations. In 2020 total production increased by 7.6% compared to 2019. According to sector insiders, many consumers have turned to prepacked products (sealed in boxes or nets) due to the pandemic (Covid-19), aiming to ensure health and safety. Standardized fruit has accounted for the largest part of the overall primary production accounting for 69%-71% over the last three years, while vegetables accounted for 29%-31%.
The size of the overall domestic apparent consumption of standardized – packaged vegetables and fruit has reported a rise in recent years. In 2020 it registered a rise of 4% compared to 2019. However, according to sector insiders actual consumption of standardized vegetables registered a fall of 10%-12% in 2020.
Overall imports of standardized fresh vegetables and fruit are estimated to have accounted for approximately 23%-26% of total consumption (in quantity) over the last three years (2018-2020).
Exports of standardized fresh vegetables (mainly fruit) have increased in recent years, registering a rise of 5.5% in 2020 compared to 2019.
The share of total exports in the total production has reached approximately 46%-47% over the last two years.
Citrus fruit accounted for the largest part of standardized fruit consumption, with a share of 38.7% in 2020. The categories of stone fruits and pome fruits follow.
Potatoes had the lion’s share in the domestic consumption of vegetables in 2020 with 41.4% followed by tomatoes.
