MARBLE AND GRANITE

The sector consists of a few large companies which not only quarry marble blocks but also process and manufacture final products, as well as many smaller-sized companies which usually only process marble and granite. The number of companies whose business involves granite is small, and the majority of them is also active in the marble sector. Granite is imported since there is no granite quarrying in Greece.
The domestic production of marble blocks has recovered in recent years, due to increased demand for exports. The overall production of final marble products registered a fall of 6.5% in 2017 compared to 2016.
Total marble exports registered a significant rise from 2009 onwards. In 2017 the category of raw marble had the lion’s share (79.8%) as regards total exports.
The domestic market of marble blocks registered a cumulative decline of 53% in 2017 compared to 2007.
The domestic market of finished marble products has been in decline in recent years, registering a fall of 19.5% in 2017 compared to 2016.
Exports registered a sharp rise during the period 2017/16. In 2017 57% of marble blocks (marble blocks, offcuts, gravels) were exported and 48% was sold in Greece.
Granite consumption in Greece has registered a significant fall from 2008 onwards (excluding 2016) and dropped by 33.3% in 2017 compared to 2016.
