The domestic market of petroleum products operates at three levels (refinery, wholesale and retail trade). Production of crude oil in Greece involves two domestic oil refiners (4 refineries) and a significant number of wholesalers.
The overall consumption of petroleum products registered a fall during 2010-2016 at an average annual rate of 5%. In 2015 however the decline was halted but in 2016 the total consumption of petroleum products slightly dropped (by 0.3%) compared to 2015.
The overall fuel consumption registered a slight rise (0.13%) in 2018 compare to 2017. According to estimates, it is expected to register a slight increase (2.5%) in 2019.
Fuel consumption in the “Internal” Market” accounted for 61% of total consumption in 2018.
Marine fuel oil had the largest share in the total fuel consumption in 2018 (26.1%), followed by automotive diesel (24.3%) and gasoline (20.7%).
The market of natural gas has registered a fall in 2018 compared to 2017, with the largest share being used in electricity production.
