The domestic market of petroleum products operates at three levels (refinery, wholesale and retail trade). Production of crude oil in Greece involves two domestic oil refiners (4 refineries) and a significant number of wholesalers.
The total domestic production of Greek refineries in petroleum products showed a decrease of 8.5% in 2019 compared to 2018.
The overall consumption of petroleum products reported fluctuations during 2013-2016, while in the next three years (2017-2019) it followed an upward trend. It is pointed out that 2019 marked the highest annual increase (5.1%, 2019/2018).
Fuel consumption in the “Internal” Market” accounted for 60% of total consumption in 2019.
Marine fuel oil had the largest share in the total fuel consumption in 2019 (28%), followed by automotive diesel (23.4%) and gasoline (19.6%).
The total consumption of natural gas has registered a significant rise of 15.4% in 2019 compared to 2018.
