FRUIT JUICES - SOFT DRINKS

The sector of fruit juices and soft drinks consists of few large sized companies, which market their products around the Greek territory and are majority shareholders in the market. However, other small and medium sized companies also operate in the market which are mainly local businesses.
Domestic production of juices registered a slight rise in 2019 (+0.5% compared to 2018). However, the outbreak of the pandemic resulted in the reduction of total production by 6.6% in 2020 compared to 2019. The total domestic production of soft drinks declined in 2019 (-3.6% compared to 2018). In 2020 production of soft drinks was lower registering a fall of 12.5% during 2020/2019.
The domestic consumption of juices started recovering after a continuous fall during 2009-2016, a trend which was halted due to COVID-19 in 2020. Particularly, domestic consumption is estimated to have decreased by 5.9% in 2020 compared to the previous year.
During 2016-2018 the domestic consumption of soft drinks reported a rise over time by an annual growth rate of 4.4%. However, in the next two years the domestic consumption dropped. The spread of the pandemic and the significant reduction in tourism and the HO.RE.CA channel last year, led the market of soft drinks to a decrease which is estimated at 12.4% in 2020/2019.
Demand for both products is covered by domestic production. Regarding juices, the import penetration in 2020 was approximately 1.3% of the total domestic consumption of juices, while for soft drinks this percentage was higher (12%).
The export performance of juices has been increasing in recent years, while for soft drinks it has been lower. Particularly, in 2020 exports as a percentage of domestic production, amounted to 16.2% and 7.4% for juices and soft drinks, respectively.
