ELECTRICITY SUPPLIERS

The electricity market in Greece has been steadily developing in recent years as its liberalization has been slowly but steadily proceeding. The course of the sector depends on State’s policy and the implementation of the relevant institutional framework.
The current institutional framework allows the operation of independent suppliers, which ensure the access of customers to the Transmission and Distribution System of Electricity.
Currently approximately thirty (30) companies hold an electricity supply and trading license.
Domestic electricity consumption has ranged around the same levels over the period 2012-2017.
The "Low Voltage Customers" category (mainly household consumers) has the lion’s share in the domestic electricity consumption with about 62.5% in 2017.
The total net generation of electricity increased by 9.4% in 2017 after three years of stagnation (2014-2016).
Lignite has the highest share in the total electricity generation, accounting for 38.6% of all sources in 2017, followed by natural gas with 35.9% and RES with 20%.
