The cosmetics sector in Greece is comprised of a great number of companies, the majority of which are engaged in more than one product categories. A key element which makes cosmetic businesses differ from one another is their distribution network channels.
The domestic production of cosmetics (in value) registered a rise 2.2%) in 2017. Skin care products had the lion’s share (45%) followed by hair care products with 31%.
As regards the domestic market of cosmetics (wholesale prices) it has been recovering from 2014 onwards and in 2017 it has grown slightly by 1.1% compared to the previous year. A rise is estimated for 2018 (+2%). Skin care products constitute the major cosmetics category over time. In 2017 it is estimated that they accounted for about 55% of total sales, followed by hair care products with a share of 26%. There has been a steady rise in the facial make up products category in recent years.
The mass distribution channel is estimated to have accounted for 46% of the total market of cosmetics in 2017 followed by pharmacies (24%).
The selective distribution channel has registered a significant fall in recent years. However, since 2016 it has started recovering, mainly due to significant discounts on behalf of companies, registering an annual rise of 2.7%.
