BAKERIES AND CONFECTIONERY

A large number of companies operate in the sector of bakeries and confectionery (approximately 9,025 according to the estimates of EL.STAT.). These are mainly family businesses and they deal with the production of bakery – confectionery goods. Moreover, many companies also deal with the production and / or trade of pastry products. Similarly, a great number of businesses operate in the pastry manufacturing sector which are distinguished into: a) Confectionery industries, which provide a variety of product categories, mainly wholesale to other pastry shops / retail stores, restaurants, etc., b) Manufacturing units which market their products, mainly in retail, in their own stores or to other stores.
The market is fragmented among a multitude of businesses / stores, the majority of which are small sized. According to estimates, 15 large bakery chains operating a total of 272 stores are estimated to have jointly accounted for about 15% of the total market value in 2018. Furthermore, 13 large confectionery chains operating a total of 194 stores are estimated to have jointly accounted for about 17%-18% of the total market value in 2018.
The total turnover of bakeries in Greece increased by 4.4% in 2019 compared to 2018.
Fresh bread has the lion’s share in the market of bakeries with 60%-65%.
After a period (2010-2016) of continuous decline in market value, upward trends are observed over the period 2017-2018. Particularly, the overall domestic market of confectioneries registered a rise of 3.6% in 2019 compared to 2018.
